Joy trained at Kingston on Thames and Croydon Art College. She has lectured at Birmingham Polytechnic in the faculty of Fashion and Textiles for a few years and then concentrated on design and manufacturing alongside her husband in a textile design company they formed in Leamington Spa..

In recent years Joy has progressed into painting and printmaking, finding inspiration in colour, rhythms and energy of light on both landscape and cities.

MONOPRINTS

Monoprint / monotype.  This is a one-of-a- kind print made by painting on a sheet of metal, glass or plastic and transferring the still wet painting to a sheet of paper by hand or with an etching press.

Monoprinting is not a multiple replica process since each print is unique.

I use plastic plates and vegetable inks. I combine painting directly on a plate and also rolling colours and creating textures.  In my  prints I explore wiping the colour away with a rag and drawing with fine sticks and even credit cards.

If, after the first print there is still some ink left on the plate I draw again into this and apply more inks to obtain a variation from the first image. I hand print them. The excitement is in seeing your drawings and paintings recreated with different marks and softness that you can only achieve through monoprinting.

Many artists have used this process dating back to 1640, including Castiglione and Rembrandt, right up to Degas, Gauguin, Matisse, Jasper Johns and Sam Francis.

Degas used monoprinting extensively, sometimes for his nudes in their own right, and many times as a base for his pastels.  He used the substractive method, which was covering the plate in ink and then wiping with a rag, achieving sensuous marks.

I hope this is useful in understanding my work and my monoprints.
